23 Nov 2006 — Youth for Human Rights International Calls for International Participation in Human Rights Day 2006

With Human Rights Day, December 10, 2006, fast approaching, Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) has put out a call to human rights groups around the world to rededicate themselves to promote the full implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Youth for Human Rights International chapters held celebrations like this in South Africa, and in cities all over the world.

Eleanor Roosevelt, who led the commission that drafted the Universal Declaration, once wrote, "Where do universal rights begin? In small places, close to home — so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world... Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."
In this same spirit, Youth for Human Rights has been advocating individual action to promote education in and implementation of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Created in 2001 as an outreach project of the International Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance, YHRI and its chapters around, with the support of the Foundation and the Church of Scientology International, provide educational materials and campaigns to bring about an atmosphere of tolerance and peace, in keeping with the preamble to the Universal Declaration, which states, "...recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world."

In commemoration of Human Rights Day 2006, YHRI invites individuals and groups to take action to make human rights a reality, and send in their news and photos for publishing in a Human Rights Day 2006 Visual Gallery on the YHRI web site.

They are also encouraged to sign a pledge stating:

"In the spirit of the 58th Anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; I pledge to read, understand and put into practice the 30 basic rights of this great document and do my part to make human rights a FACT within my community and my own sphere of influence."

Last year groups participating in the Human Rights Day celebration included the Youth for Human Rights International chapter of Munich.
