21 Mar 2007 — Scientology Churches, Combating Drug Abuse in Italy

Last year Italy was rocked by the shocking news that cocaine use in Milano, Torino and other Northern Italian cities was 80 times higher than previously thought to be. This, coupled with the report published by the European Parliament in 2006 that 60% of Italian club-goers had tried cocaine at least once, brought to light the urgency of combating the drug problem in the country.

The Church of Scientology of Brescia sponsors a chapter of the Drug-Free Marshals.

For years, Scientology churches throughout Italy have been working to bring the truth about drugs to the youth of the country. But with this news, Italian Scientologists greatly stepped up their anti-drug campaign, to reverse this alarming trend by reaching as many young people as possible with the truth about drugs.

A case in point is the Church of Scientology of Brescia, a city 54 miles east of Milano. The Scientologists in this city are determined to help children and teenagers avoid the tragedy of drug abuse by providing them with factual information and helping them make the commitment to live drug-free lives.

These children learn about the dangers of drug use and pledge to live drug-free lives.

And they are understandably excited about a series of drug prevention booklets recently produced by the Foundation for a Drug-Free World: individual, pocket-sized booklets on frequently abused drugs such as cocaine, crack, ecstasy, heroin and cannabis.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a secular nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, California, established to meet the increasing demand for the international "Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life" drug prevention program. Based on more than 20 years of experience talking to young people about drugs, these booklets make it possible for youth to make rational decisions about their own future. The Foundation makes these materials available to any group or organization. They can be ordered online at the Foundation's web site.

Every weekend, volunteers from the Church of Scientology of Brescia man info-stands where they distribute these booklets and talk to young people about the danger of drugs.

The Church sponsors anti-drug youth activities, such as the "Say No to Drugs" soccer team and the Brescia chapter of the Drug-Free Marshals, a child-oriented anti-drug group that gets to kids before they are exposed to pro-drug peer pressure.

In the 1960s Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, discovered that drug use "can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being." Scientologists know how much better one can do without mind-altering drugs and they are committed to helping people live happier, more rewarding, drug-free lives.

For more information on the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, and to read copies of the booklets online or order copies for your own group or organization visit their web site at www.drugfreeworld.org.
