1 Nov 2007 — Scientology Volunteers Help in One of Southern California's Worst Fires Seasons

Firefighters have finally tamed the conflagration that destroyed over 2800 structures, charred more than 500 thousand acres and killed seven in a region that stretches from Santa Barbara County to the US-Mexico border.

Firefighters have finally tamed the conflagration that destroyed 2,813 structures, charred 518,489 acres and killed seven in a region that stretches from Santa Barbara County to the US-Mexico border.

As news of the blazes first hit, the Scientology churches of Southern California activated their Scientology Volunteer Ministers(VMs) to provide any service needed to help those battling the fires and those evacuated or left homeless in a disaster classified by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President George W. Bush as a state of emergency. Scientologists from Northern California, Nevada, Arizona, Florida and British Columbia joined the hundreds of Southern Californians who manned shelters, delivered supplies, helped organize the relief effort and provided service to fire fighters who were bringing the fires under control.

The VMs provide Scientology assists* to the firemen, helping them relieve the stress connected with the long hours of dangerous, grueling work. These assists helped firefighters relax, sleep and prepare themselves for the next arduous day on the fire lines.

Volunteer Ministers established, opened and manned a shelter at Mira Costa College in Oceanside for local residents who had to evacuate their homes. They served around the clock to ensure that help was available whenever needed.

"L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology religion, once wrote, 'a being is only as valuable as he can serve others'," said Veronica Albano, international spokesperson for the Scientology Volunteer Ministers. "The fire fighters and the many volunteers who helped the people of Southern California over the past week, when it really counted, have shown how valuable they are."

* Scientology assists are procedures that address the spiritual component in trauma and stress. A number of these assists are described in the Scientology Handbook, a textbook based on the works of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
